Iittala, one of the most iconic Finnish design brands, is celebrating the centenary anniversary of Finland's independence with a special collection. It takes the colour ultramarine blue as its common theme.

Blue has a special significance for the Finns. Their flag displays a blue cross on a white background and is also called siniristilippu or the ‘Blue Cross Flag’. The blue symbolises the lakes and the sky, while the white denotes the snow. The colours also refer to the flag of Russia, with which Finland had a special bond for over a century. The Finns had their own constitution and government, but the Russian tsar was their grand prince.

Clarity and warmth from Finland

However, 1917 was a turbulent year for the Russian empire. Defeat in the First World War was followed by the February Revolution, during which the Tsar was overthrown, and the October Revolution, when Lenin and Trotsky's Bolsheviks seized power. Finland declared itself unilaterally independent on 6 December 1917 and this was recognised by Russia a brief month later.

Iittala has already initiated this celebratory year with the Ultramarine Blue collection. The iconic brand says about the new collection, which includes glasses, plates and vases, "we are making a clear design statement here, which is rooted in glass and visualised in shades of genuine Finnish blue." Iittala specialises in glass and obtained the intense, glossy colour by using a special glass recipe. The blue "pays tribute to the clarity and the genuine warmth that Finland embodies."
