At Master Meubel, we put art in the spotlight, made not only by furniture designers but also by painters and sculptors. We have a special, long-term relationship with southern French artist Dominique Pouchain.

The young Dominique grew up in a creative environment. Father Jacques was ceramist and painter, mother Rolande decorator. They gave him an eye for artistry and a fascination with Picasso and Miro.

Since the late eighties, Dominique Pouchain has chosen resolutely for his animal sculptures, at first in ceramics, later in bronze and clay. They hark back to primal forms, simplified themes and ancient natural forms.

The basis of his quest is the light, vivid colors or all-absorbing black. The artist gives the viewer a feeling of warmth and a smile thanks to the innocent naivety with which he gives his creatures form.

“The clay has won him over”

“The method is simple”, Lorette Nobécourt wrote about Dominique Pouchain. “It’s a process that has always been used by pottery bakers. A centuries-old tradition, much older than those specific to the Dieulefit territory where he was born in 1956. It is an ancient process. He has not won over the clay, the clay has slowly overpowered him…”

“Dominique Pouchain has used all the materials and techniques he had at his disposal”, said Nobécourt. “The clean lines of his work say enough about the high level of inner accomplishment. Between light and shadow, he knows that one inevitably evokes the other, and vice versa…”
